The New TOEFL iBT Test
The test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL TM) is a standardized test that measures the English proficiency of students who wish to enter college, university, and/or the workplace in English-speaking academic/professional settings. The new iBT (internet-based test) TOEFL exam, also known as The Next Generation TOEFL Test, has four sections covering the language skills of reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The test is about 3 ½ - 4 hours long, with one 10 minute break after the listening section. In the reading section, students read three passages about some academic / university topics and answer (13-14 questions per reading passage) questions about them.
In the listening section, students listen to two conversations and four lectures and answer questions about them.
In the speaking section, students speak in response to two questions about their own experience (give an opinion) and four questions about texts that they listen to or read during the test.
In the writing section, students write in response to two questions. One question is about a reading and a lecture, and the other question is about a general topic (give an opinion).
The SAT Program
What is the SAT Reasoning Test?
The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) Reasoning Test is a measure of the critical thinking skills you'll need for academic success in college. The SAT assesses how well you analyze and solve problems, the skills you learned in school that you'll need in college. The SAT is typically taken by high school juniors and seniors. Each section of the SAT is scored on a scale of 200-800, with two writing subscores for multiple-choice and the essay
The SAT includes a Critical Reading, Mathematics, and Writing section, with a specific number of questions related to content. In addition, there is one 25-minute unscored section, known as the variable or equating section. This unscored section may be either a critical reading, mathematics, or writing multiple-choice section. This unscored section does not count toward the final score, but is used to try out new questions for future editions of the SAT and to ensure that scores on new editions of the SAT are comparable to scores on earlier editions of the test. The 25-minute essay will always be the first section of the SAT, and the 10-minute multiple-choice writing section will always be the final section. The remaining six 25-minute sections can appear in any order, as can the two 20-minute sections. Test takers sitting next to each other in the same testing session may have test books with entirely different sections.
Students in SAT preparation classes will:
- Improve essay writing skills (Including: interpreting the question, planning, structure, writing different essay styles, varying sentence structure, improving grammar, and writing a good introduction and conclusion)
